Bone broth for gut health

When I make this delicious homemade bone broth, I often double this portion, and freeze some for later.

Then all you need to do is defrost broth, add vegetables and meat/protein of choice and dinner is ready.

Homemade bone broth is high in protein and other nutrients. It can support brain function, sleep and bone health, fight inflammation and benefit the digestive system.

The flavor is AMAZING and it contains none of the additives of store-bought processed stock. Reducing processed foods in general is a good step towards gut health.

All this is great for gut health and a gut healthy diet!

What’s not to love about that??

Bone broth ingredients

1 kilo bones or pork leg with meat on

2-3 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped

1 onion, peeled and roughly chopped

1 parsely root, peeled and roughly chopped

2-3 cloves garlic, whole with peel

2-3 stems celeriac, roughly chopped (no leaves)

Spices: 1 cinnamon stick, 3 star aniseeds, 8-10 whole black pepper

Cooking oil

Method

  • Heat cooking oil, add the vegetables, and cook for 3-4 minutes
  • Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Using a spoon, remove the ‘foam’ that comes to the surface. Then let simmer on low heat, 4 hours or so
  • Using a sieve, strain the stock into another pot. Throw away the veg and spices
  • If you have used e.g., pork leg, then pick off the meat before discarding the bone
  • Reduce the stock by boiling it (in the new pot) on medium high heat
  • When I have time, I reduce the stock to about half
  • Use immediately or store in fridge for a couple of days or freeze for later
